How Your Story of Who You Want to Be Will Sabotage You in 2020

Who you think you are, not who you want to be, will dictate the rest of your life.

Who do you want to be?

You know, that ideal, perfect, successful, happy person who you dream about. That person who seems so far away some days. That person who has it all together, and has life figured out.

As long as you want to be that person, you will never become that person.

Wanting is a state of separation. It is a perception of lack: “This thing is missing in my life, so I want it to be there.”

This attitude will typically show up in people wanting a relationship and expecting the other person to “complete” them in some way. (Yeah, we all know how those situations go…)

If you are not being your ideal persona now, then who are you being currently?

That’s the story you are telling yourself about who you are. That is the story you are manifesting and living in this moment.

In many ways, this state of being is very similar to the statement, “I’ll be happy when _______ happens.”

You’re mortgaging your present for some mysterious day in the future when you miraculously will have the perfect relationship, job, or life.

In the meantime, you’re miserable…a victim of fate.

Why? Because you are waiting for something to happen rather than making it happen.

You are stuck in a lack-state of wanting rather than a creation-state of being.

Realizing that you are allowed to be happy in the present, and every day, is the first step in achieving your goals for the future.

If you are desiring the ideal relationship, who will your ideal partner be more attracted to when they met you – your current moody self, or your happy, interesting self?

Will your next employer be more likely to hire you if you show up at your interview engaged and interested, displaying your passion for what you do, or if you show up as a grumpy, “I just want out of my current job, what can you do for me” hopeless person?

If your successful future self met you right now, what would you think of you?

It’s time to give up on being you.

It’s time to start being YOU – the you that you are only wanting to be currently.

Take a moment to sit quietly, free from distractions. Turn your phone off. Turn the TV off. Get out of the house if you need to.

Imagine you are going to meet your successful future self. You are going to interview them.

In this scenario, you are not showing up with a “what can you do for me” attitude. You are going to meet them with a student’s mind – “What can you teach me?”

Ask them questions like:

“What was your first step in becoming so successful and happy?”

“How did you stay in your zone?”

“How do you deal with negative people?”

…and any other questions that are relevant to the specific challenges you may be facing.

Your last question to them should be something similar to this: “What can I do to be more like you?”

The answer that they give you is your first clue, your first action step, in changing your life and taking charge of your destiny.

Make it so.
