Why are people afraid of hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Possibly because they have a misconception of hypnosis due to movies and TV shows presenting hypnosis incorrectly.

Stage hypnosis for entertainment purposes also presents hypnosis in a way that may not be in alignment with the goals and purpose hypnotherapy.

How is hypnotherapy different from stage hypnosis?
