Obstacles to Your Growth – Part 1: How Resentment Blocks Your Financial Success

You want to be rich, right?

I’ll bet you said, “Of course I do!”

So, why aren’t you rich already?

I am sure that you can give me a litany of reasons. Some may be valid and some may be excuses masquerading as valid reasons.

Underneath these conscious statements may be a deeper, unconscious belief system that is actually the basis of your limitations.

RICH is a Four-Letter Word - Literally, and sometimes figuratively.

How do you feel when you hear the word “rich”? When you imagine yourself as “rich,” what do you feel?

More importantly, when you see or hear about someone else who is rich, how do you feel? Are you happy for them, or do you get frustrated and down-play their success by making excuses for how they achieved their wealth – such as “they were born lucky,” or “they cheated somebody,” or “I could do it too, if I had the opportunities that he/she had”?

Or worse, do you think to yourself, “I can’t wait for them to lose it all. They don’t deserve it.”

If you felt great about yourself being rich, but resentful or angry when you thought about someone else experiencing abundance, you are blocking your own financial growth.

Your subconscious mind will never allow you to become that which you resent.

If you have negative self-talk around money and success, you will limit your experience of wealth and achievement… because if rich people are cheats, and money is bad, then you certainly don’t want to be associate with either idea, do you?

You’ve probably heard terms like “dirty money,” “filthy rich,” and “money is the root of all evil.”

You may even use them from time to time.

Why would you want to have dirty money in your hands? Why would you want to be “filthy” rich? If money is the root of all evil, why would you want to have money, wouldn’t that make you evil?

Or maybe money “burns a hole in your pocket” and flees from you as quickly as it arrives.

These concepts were recently brought back to my awareness as I finished reading Dr. Joseph Murphy’s classic book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind.

While the writing style feels a bit dated here in 2018, the concepts outlined in this book are timeless and powerful for creating awareness of our ability to realize our full potential in life.

As Dr. Murphy notes in chapter 10, “…you lose what you condemn. You cannot attract what you criticize.”

Last night, the second largest jackpot in lottery history, $1.537 billion in the Mega Millions game was one on a single ticket. The person or group who bought this ticket just received a windfall of financial blessings.

If you purchased a ticket on the hopes of winning the jackpot and living your dreams, how did you feel this morning when you heard only one ticket won the pot?

Did you say things like, “That’s too much money for one person,” “What a waste of money,” or “Nobody is worth that much/should have that much”?

Congratulations! You are doing a great job blocking your financial success!

How?

First off, the generalized statement “No one is worth/deserves that much” includes YOU. You are part of “everyone/no one.”

By making this logically-false statement, you are saying, “I am not worthy and deserving of having large amounts of money.”

It’s time to change your money story

Even last night’s Mega Millions winner(s) may need to change their relationship to money, because studies show that up to 70% of windfall lottery winners wind up bankrupt in 3 years.

Are you happy to hear that? I hope not.

While changing your money story won’t necessarily lead to you winning the lottery, it will help you to create a new relationship with money so that you can experience wealth.

Start evaluating your relationship and stories about money.

What is your relationship with money? Is it always leaving as soon as it arrives, or does it like to hang around with you?

Do you enjoy spending more than you enjoy earning and saving?

Do you feel like there’s never enough to go around?

If you have limiting beliefs about how much money you deserve, ask yourself, “Why is it THAT number?”

Create your new relationship with money.

As you ask yourself these tough questions, realize that you can change this old story and belief system.

Think of ideas on how you can express happiness for those who are successful. They aren’t all bad…that’s a logical fallacy. If it helps you to create your new vision, research the stories of successful people who are philanthropic or seem to have the relationship with money that you wish to have.

Live in gratitude, not in lack.

Stop saying, “I want more money.”

The idea of “wanting” is based in lack. We are left ‘wanting’ when we feel that we don’t have enough.

Instead, create a mindset around a mantra such as, “I have everything I need, every moment, every day.”

Rather than focusing on lack and wanting, affirmations such as this bring our awareness to the reality that we are have financial blessings present in our lives every day.

When we are focused on what we believe to be lacking, we see the lack instead of the presence of abundance.

And, as you know from that famous quote: “You get more of what you focus on.”

What are you focusing on that is not creating your ideal results?
